Cheryl Roost went to hell and back after her son, an accomplished jockey, was involved in a horrific car accident which killed his best friend on Mothers Day 1996. Phillip lost his career as a jockey. But out of the horrors some good has come. Cheryl used Phillip as the basis for her first book ‘Swinging on a Star’ about an injured jockey recovering and riding in the Melbourne Cup.
Cheryl derives her inspiration for her second book ‘Mary in the Morning’ from years of experience living with a family’s heartache at losing a loved one in the Vietnam War. Her husband’s brother, Chris Roost, was killed in Vietnam on his first wedding anniversary. His widow Mary still mourns the loss of her young husband, who was taken from her in such tragic circumstances.
Cheryl admits writing a true story has been an enormous challenge but after a lot of research, travelling all over Australia to meet various military personnel, she is thrilled with the final result and in particular the support she has received in telling this emotional story.
1990 – Won a media award for the International Year of Literacy, presented by Margaret Whitlam in Canberra for a 56 page publication titled '1990 The Year of Literacy'.
1991- Supported the Shark Bay Schools network in Western Australia to publish a similar newspaper to the '1990 The Year of Literacy' that involved the schools of the region.
1994/5 – A member of the Victorian Plenary Committee 'Australia Remembers 1945 to 1995', the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII. I was appointed to the committee by the then Minister for Veterans Affairs Hon Con Sciacca and worked with Chairperson Mr. Tony Beddison ( well known business man, radio personality and a member of the thoroughbred horse racing industry). The goal of the committee was to plan events such as book launches, street parades, ecumenical church services, unveiling ceremonies, memorial ball and seek funding assistance for local groups involved in the celebration and dedication to all war veterans who fought for their country in WWII.
1996 – My son Phillip Roost, a leading apprentice jockey in Victoria was involved in a horrific car accident that claimed the life of fellow apprentice Travis Harrison.
1999 – Began writing a novella on the glitz and glamour of the thoroughbred horse racing industry, particularly the Spring Racing Carnival and the prestigious Melbourne Cup, dedicated to the late Travis Harrison.
